Feeling the call to explore witchcraft but don’t know where to start? Samesies. You’re not alone. The amount of articles I have found researching this question shows that many people are drawn to this spiritual practice. Witchcraft helps us connect with nature, intuition, and create change in our lives. So the big question that I am researching is, “What is Witchcraft?”.

What is Witchcraft?

I am also confused.
Digital art that I created while thinking about how confusing it all is.
So much to think of.

We are going to focus on the Modern form of witchcraft, often called contemporary paganism or Wicca, which is a nature-based spiritual practice that is focused on personal empowerment, connection to natural cycles, and the use of intention and energy work. Unlike past stereotypes and what is portrayed in movies the practice is focused on healing, self-improvement, and living in harmony with the natural world. There is a side that I have listened to in podcasts that I do agree with … slightly, its hard to set a moral boundary line with these thoughts. The thoughts are around hexing and sending negative intentions to others, in what I would consider a form of self defense.

Common Misconceptions

  • You do not need expensive tools or elaborate rituals. Simple practices with everyday items can be just as meaningful.
  • There’s no single “right” way to practice. Witchcraft is highly individualized and can complement existing spiritual beliefs.
  • It is not about worshipping the devil. Most modern practitioners work with nature spirits, ancestral wisdom, or simply universal energy.

First steps

  • Start with self-reflection
  • Learn about natural cycles
  • Develop a daily practice
  • Study the basics

Take it slow

There are so many ways to start up your practice. It personally gives me anxiety thinking about all that I am reading. But good place to start is figuring out what you are seeking. A deeper connection to nature? Tools for personal growth? Develop your intuition? Figuring this out will help you start your path.

Learn about natural cycles is a fun one. Begin observing the phases of the moon, the changing seasons, and how these cycles affect your energy and mood. Many practitioners align their work with lunar phases. New moons for new beginnings, and full moons for manifestation and release. I enjoy standing under the moon, staring at it, basking in the moon light gives me a feeling of awe and power.

I try my best to follow the cycles of nature but I allow my current life schedule interfere with that, part of my goal is to give time to myself and allow the moon phases to be a part of my day.

Develop a daily practice is a good one to start with in my opinion. Develop a routine that fits into your life. Start with ONE! Trust me, trying to take on too many new routines will end in not keeping any of them. It’s okay if you miss a day, there is no need to psychology punish yourself this practice is about moving at your own pace. Currently I use an app to help me develop new habits. (I am not paid for advertising) I use Finch, I am not crazy about the graphic design but it is working for me.

  • Morning gratitude or intention setting
  • Evening reflection or journaling
  • Mindful time in nature
  • Meditation or grounding exercises
